Palermo is a city that can leave you with mixed feelings. On one side, you will find a rich history with nice churches, busy squares, and good food that is affordable—think great pizzas for under 5 euros! The locals are usually friendly, and the city is full of life, especially around its busy markets. It’s a good place if you want to enjoy life and meet people (you can connect with expats for a friendly community). However, there are some issues to consider. The city has a lot of litter, and you may see some areas that need cleaning. If you are out after dark, it is safer to stick to the main streets. Language can also be a problem; knowing some Italian can help you connect with locals. Public transport can be a bit difficult, so talk to locals for advice and think about renting a bike to get around. For those who want a quieter experience, neighborhoods like Carini offer this, and although there is no beach in the center, the beautiful Mondello is a short trip away. Just be ready... for a different pace of life compared to other European cities!
