Shanghai is a vibrant and fast-paced city where East meets West. It’s a place where you can experience both traditional Chinese culture and modern life. If you stay in areas like Jing’an or the French Concession, you’ll enjoy a lifestyle similar to New York City with plenty of food options from all over the world, including Asian, Western, and fusion cuisines. Locals are friendly, but not everyone speaks English, so learning some Mandarin will make your visit more enjoyable. The city has a unique vibe. The subway system is modern and affordable, making it easy to get around. However, cultural differences, such as local customs and the "Great Firewall" (which can slow down your internet), might take some time to adjust to. Be sure to get a VPN to avoid internet restrictions. Shanghai is very safe, with many security cameras, but the fast pace of life can make the city feel distant at times. For relaxation, you can visit parks in the mornings where you’ll see locals practicing tai chi... and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. If you enjoy online shopping, Shanghai is perfect for you, as next-day delivery is common. Keep in mind that using local payment methods can be tricky without a Chinese bank account. Overall, Shanghai offers a dynamic and exciting environment, with something new around every corner. Be patient and flexible, and you’ll have a rewarding experience!

Living in Shanghai as a remote worker has been quite an experience First, it’s a safe city. I never felt worried walking around even late at night. The streets are clean and there’s a strong sense of safety everywhere you go. The food is great. Shanghai has everything from delicious street food to expensive restaurants. Some of my favorites are local dumplings, and from time to time I enjoy... Western dishes. Free speech isn’t a big thing in China, so you’ll need to be cautious about discussing certain topics. This was at least for me the biggest downside as I am used to expressing my opinions freely.
Shanghai is not just a destination; it’s an experience. It’s a city of contrasts, where tradition meets modernity, and every corner tells a story. Whether you’re there for the food, the culture, the shopping, or simply the vibe, Shanghai offers something unforgettable for everyone.
